What to know

  • Medigap works with Original Medicare, not Medicare Advantage.
  • Policies are sold by private insurers.
  • Your six-month Medigap open enrollment period is especially important.

What Medigap does

Medigap helps pay some of the deductibles, copayments and coinsurance left by Original Medicare. You generally need Part A and Part B to buy a policy, and each policy covers one person.

Standardized plan letters

Most states, including Florida, use standardized Medigap plan letters. Benefits within the same letter are standardized, but premiums and company service can differ.

Timing can affect access

The federal Medigap open enrollment period lasts six months and begins when you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. Outside protected periods, medical underwriting may apply depending on the situation and state law.
