What to know

  • Both paths provide Part A and Part B benefits.
  • Provider access, drug coverage and out-of-pocket structure can differ.
  • The right questions are more useful than a universal winner.

Original Medicare

Original Medicare is administered by the federal government and lets you use providers nationwide who accept Medicare. It does not include an annual out-of-pocket maximum for Part A and Part B services, so some people add Medigap and separate Part D coverage.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by Medicare-approved private companies. They bundle Part A and Part B and usually Part D. Networks, service areas, prior authorization, cost sharing and extra benefits vary by plan.
